The conflict in Kashmir began in 1947 and is still going on today. Groups involved include Hindus and Muslims. Key events include the 1947 Partition and Indo-Pakistani War, the 1965 Kashmir War, the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, the Insurgery Erupts, the 1989 Panda Exodus, the 1999 Indo-Pakistani War, and Attacks on Hindu Pilgrims from 2000-2002.
The historical origin was that the Mahajara of Jammu and Kashmir (Hindu) wanted to join the Muslim province of India rather than Muslim-majority Pakistan. Pakistan insists that the Muslims of Kashmir are being held captive by the Hindus. Religious factors are involved because the Pakistan Muslims are starting conflicts with the Hindus. International forces are semi-important, as many people have been keeping watch but not too many have been taking action. Socioeconomic factors are involved because the population is majority Muslim and the economy is suffering. Religion intersects with the other factors because religion is a big part of these societies. |
The Northern Ireland conflict was between Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. The conflict itself was kept within Ireland; however, many fled to different countries due to the violence caused by this conflict. (For example, my aunt's parents fled Ireland around the beginning of the conflict.) While religion wasn't exactly what the groups were fighting over--the conflict was politically based--it was one of the factors that helped identify the groups, as each group had certain political views that most everyone in that group agreed with.
The conflict included major events such as The Hunger Strikes, the Clonard Monastery Negotiations, the Loyalist Parliamentary Ceasefire, the Witnesses to the IRA Decommissioning, and Bloody Sunday. It ended with the 1998 Belfast Agreement. The historical origin of the case was that a very long time ago Great Britain took over Ireland and made everyone who was Irish Catholic not a citizen. Domestic forces drove the conflict and its negotiated solution because religion was an important part of people's identity and the dividing forces between people. International religious and political forces were extremely important, because representatives from America and Britain helped in trying to solve the conflict. The Sudan conflict deals with the Northern Muslim Arabs and the Southern Black African Christians. The key events were the 1955 Equatoria Corps uprising in the South, Sudan gaining independence in 1956, The first civil war from 1962-1972, and the second civil war from 1983-2005. The historical origins are that Christianity was spread to Sudan in the sixth century and later on there was Islamization. At first it was peaceful, but it later grew violent. Domestic factors were involved because religious identity was very important to these people and most (if not all) did not want to change. International factors are pretty important, as Americans are staying out of Sudan and mark it as a terrorist country. Socioeconomic factors have taken a part because a lot of government and political groups are taking action on the conflict. |
